Principles of Support
We
will see the individual first, not the illness.
We recognize mental illnesses are brain disorders.
We aim for better coping skills.
We find strength in sharing experiences.
We reject stigma in ourselves and others.
We won't judge anyone's pain as less than our own.
We forgive ourselves and reject guilt.
We embrace humor as healthy.
We accept we cannot resolve all problems.
We expect a better future in a realistic way.
We will never give up hope.
NAMI-NC offers you

Advocacy
NAMI-NC presses for improvement in mental health services on the
local, state and national levels. We keep informed about issues.
Individually and as an advocacy organization, NAMI-NC reaches
out to legislators, executive agencies, providers and individuals
who can help improve conditions for those with mental illness.
Current key issues include: Insurance Parity (ending the discrimination
between insurance coverage for physical conditions and mental
illness), Housing (adding new community residences), Supported
work opportunities (helping in recovery and elevating lives beyond
the poverty level) and Research (NAMI is co-founder of NARSAD,
National Alliance for Research into Schizophrenia and Depression)
