NOTEWORTHY
Art
works created by members ofEast Side Center were displayed
in galleries at the Adirondack Community College and Crandall
Library in May and October. Pieces on display included the triptych,
produced through a grant from the NYS Council of the Arts, and
assorted paintings and drawings, produced in weekly art classes
at SSC under the direction of Toni Collura. If you would like
the SCC traveling art gallery for display at your site, contact
Toni at 793-4799.
Brain
imaging studies of girls with attention-deficit/hyperactivity
disorder show that total brain volume was smaller. In particular,
smaller volume was noted on the cerebellum (the part of the brain
responsible for controlling muscle movement and balance.) Similar
results were found imaging of boys with ADHD and suggest that
abnormalities in brain structure may be linked to ADHD.
Landmark
Study confirms cost benefits of supportive-housing programs. Tax
payers and legislators should take note of a first-of-its kind
study which confirms what providers and mental health administrators
have long believed-g programs significantly reduce the use of
acute services for homeless people with serious mental illnesses.
By tracking data across various service agencies, researchers
saw that 90 percent of the New York/New York housing program budget
was recouped through cost savings. In real dollars, this meant
a savings of $58.9 million. A copy of the full report can be viewed
at www.csh.org (Corporation for Supportive Housing) or at the
Fannie Mae Foundation's web site, www.fanniemaefoundation.org.
