Legislation
will put an end to double standards
Round
four is ready to begin as mental health coalitions get ready
for the 2001 legislative session to push for passage of a mental
health insurance parity bill. Renamed, Fair Insurance Today,
“Working for Parity in Mental Health and Chemical Dependency
Coverage”, this bill would ensure New Yorkers equal access to
mental health and substance abuse services.
Compared
to coverage of other health care and medical services, mental
health hardly tips the scale. Current insurers and health maintenance
organizations severely limit coverage and include expensive
deductibles which deter people from seeking help when needed.
This
disparity between medical and mental health is the focus of
the parity legislation. Mental health advocates are working
to end this discriminatory practice which sends the outdated
message that caring for ones mental health is not essential.
Thirty-four states across the nation have passed parity legislation.
Do
you care? If you care about your coverage, please send this
message to your Senator urging his or her support. This bill
has passed in the Assembly, but needs a push among some Senators.
Voicing your support to Assembly representatives to will give
them strength when talking to Senators.
